Make Jokes, Not War

This is a page from Joker’s Daughter #1 (Batman #23.4), which went on sale today. It’s part of an innovative DC comics scheme where nearly all the company’s regular titles this month are taken over by their heroes’ most vicious foes. In the case of the Joker’s Daughter, she’s also using the themes of a pacifistic ancient Greek comedy to undermine a shadowy patriarchic cult.

The Joker’s Daughter, in case you don’t know this from her many appearances in Batman Family and various Teen Titans titles, is Duela Dent. She is not the biological daughter of Batman’s nemesis The Joker. She was once thought to be the daughter of Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face. Then it turned out she was really The Jokester’s daughter. The Jokester is a Joker-like character who’s one of the good guys on an alternate Earth. Duela Dent’s mother is Evelyn Dent, the Earth-3 heroine also known as Three-Face.

In any case, she knows her Aristophanes, though her adaptation of the comedy soon turns tragic for the Gotham City underground tribe known as The Nethers.

“DC Comics Unleashes Joker’s Daughter in The Meat, The Marrow” is written by Ann Nocenti, with art by George Jeanty, inks by Dexter Vines, coloring by Michelle Madsen and lettering by Dezi Sienty.
