Betty & Veronica, or Beatrice and Viola?

In “Royal Treatment,” the opening story of the Sept. 1989 issue of Betty & Veronica (Vol. 2, #23), our adventurous heroines recognize “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown” as coming from Shakespeare.

“Royal Treatments was written by Frank Doyle. The second story in that same issue of B&V is written by Kathy Webb and has a Sondheimesque title, “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid.”

Betty & Veronica are undergoing a transformation soon, just like the other stalwart Riverdalians Archie and Jughead have earlier this year. A variant cover of one of the last issues of their current incarnation, Betty & Veronica #277, dresses them in Shakespearean garb.
