Our main way of hiding was sleeping. This was not a city where one slept. But we made it our mission. We were all good at it. We could sleep for days at a time. Outside of work—and none of our works were on a conventional 9 to 5 timetable—our lives had no schedules. We were as up for a walk at 3 a.m. as we were in midafternoon. Unless we were asleep.
