We all worked. We all had uniforms. For the law-firm dogsbody among us, the uniform was suit and tie. For the security guard, it was blue pants, white shirt, and a coveted badge and hat. Restaurant work could be the most demanding of all, couture-wise. One pizza chain demanded black pants, white shirt and black belt. Such things were not owned and a clothing allowance was not given, so pants and belt were duly dyed hours before the first shift. The smell was so overpowering that the job was lost.
