The spy had to shadow the rest of us, without being caught. He had to report on everything he saw us doing, without us noticing him. He needed to prove he hadn’t just fallen behind, or been browsing at a newsstand. (Remember those? Newsstands?) It’s an odd sensation to know you’re being spied upon. You feel alert and on the defensive, yet also strangely secure. Someone is watching over you. You just wish you knew why.
